about

BOY FLOWER TAMIR was written as a lament for 12 year old Tamir Rice, a Black child, loved by his family, who lived, attended school, played with his friends and dreamed; a child who-as he played with a toy gun in a park near his home-was killed by police in Cleveland, OH, on a cold November day. I was outraged and sorrowful.

I pictured Tamir playing in summer and could almost smell the crushed green and periwinkle under his tennis shoes. I thought of wildflowers protected by conservation societies, while Black children are too often unprotected by hometowns that don't allow them..us...our childhoods. I set the opening words of the poem as a lullaby, and deliver the poem while playing piano. Our band improvises collectively, propelled by the preciousness of young Tamir's life. Rest in Power, Tamir Rice.
